Page 10 (S-8) - The Issaquah Press Wednesday, January 5, 1983 I II Norma • $$ VALUABLE K-COUPON • $$ VALUABLE K-COUPON $$" Starks Next week I get a computer For years, I have had an ongoing battle with the in- animate objects of the world. While l have to admit that they are winning, I still don't intend to go down without a fight. I. Grocery carts: There is a basic structural fault with these: they are made of a self- welding metal that bonds in- stantly when two or more carts are put into close prox- imity. There is, however, a way to separate them, so read carefully. First, stand on one foot. Take the other foot, throw it over the handle of the first cart (along with your leg, of course), place it on the han- dle of the second cart, and push forward while pulling backward. This may get you a few strange looks, but you won't care. After all, you have your cart. Now you can watch the others try to get theirs. Remember to snicker• 2. Luggage: Any woman naive enough to pack her suitcase, close it, and expect it to stay closed deserves what she gets. The only documented case of a piece of luggage closing properly was one belonging to a Mr. Horatio Clyde- hopper. As I recall, he brought the suitcase home from vacation, untied the piece of rope holding it together, leaped out of the way while it sprang open, then proceeded to remove every article including his toothbrush. He then slammed the case shut, threw his body on top of the suitcase, and pressed the locks down. Then, quick as a bunny, he turned the key. At this point, he cautiously slid his body off the case, and as he watched, it remained closed! If you doubt me, look it up in one of "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" books. 3. Cardboard boxes: You know the kind. First the sender glues the flaps down. Then staples everything in sight with those big copper things. Then uses strapping tape to encircle the box a minimum of four times. I cannot tell you how best to open these, for I do not know. However, I can tell you how not to open them. Do not pick them up and chew on them. Do not mount an assault on them with your fingernails. Do not stab them with scissors or a kitchen knife. Do not drop them from a great height, in the hopes that the boxes will burst open. They won't, but you will be able to clearly hear the tinkle of broken whatever from inside. Then you will no longer have to worry about how to get the box open.
