No Troubles SkyI,oz of the t h erei Reputations, good or bad, biased itre seldom accurate, and ften damaging. Take Richrdaroubles, for instance. He was an English bulldog that belonged to our neighbor, Francis Jansen. Because he hen hewas usually tied to the clothes line, and because he was ug- r pu 1i’ Iy, he had a reputation for being vicious. )ut or Troubles was a typical with sajbull; huge chest, bowed front legs, a squashed in face that ituati3nmade him snort and wheeze ins he breathed. If he ever got incer;tia grip on another dog's tance K{throat, the story went, you'd Floss K! never get him off, you'd have m & Ki to pry his jaws apart with a icrowbar. Thus the reputation tgrew, bit by bit, until the . [sight of Troubles loose and o lyK’lroarning the neighborhood ;aquan . . jthrew everybody into a anK orlPanic" ' h ople w, It scared me half to deat .m to tithe first time he came prowl- with aling into our yard: My own lldOg, a big Malamute, went lova trotting out, stiff-legged, hapI)Y hackles bristling, to • Challenge this intrusion of ...Sml this territory ',alth D. I was panicked, i frozen with fright, as 1 wet- "direr Chad my dog bend Troubles " double and et a hold on a no latl lnd leg. Troubles let got ollowia' They stood up, stiff-legged less it! and wary, but the fight was letter rl OVer. Territorial rights had been established and from rds. # then on, Troubles observed ramma them. That's not to say he didn't r ...COme nosing around our Yard. He did, as dogs are t Wont to do, but he was t respectful, hanging back shy- ly, at the perimeter of the , Yard until our dog knew he Was there and acknowledged the visit. On those occasions, We had but to call Troubles, Pet him a little, scratch him behind the ears, and lead him home. He'd waddle along, grinning at you with that eternally open mouth, happy With the company and con- tent to go home. Turned out that Troubles Wasn't mean at all, it was all reputation, heaped upon him by the unknowing. Truth of the matter was, his disposi- tion was as sweet and gentle as the rest of the Jansen fami- ly, An astute observer once rsaid of man, "We are never as mean as we seem to OUrselves, nor as grand as we .seem to others. Somewhere in between, stands the true an, and he is known to God alotle.,, I sort of suspect that was also true of Troubles. A vic- L of cruel gossip, his true mSposition lay hidden behind shroud of hints and innuen- and it was known to CENTER 12 noon- 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 to 2.
