Gymnasts FROM PAGE C1 Kentlake's Kayla Shira was the all- around champ, scoring a 38.05. This was Issaquah's first season competing in 4A, after years of being a powerhouse in 3A. "It was anybody's game. Being our first year in 4A, we didn't really know what to expect," Fleisher said. "We just came out and wanted to do well, and we did that." Fukuda ended up 24th in the all-around with 27.25 points, while Goree was right behind her at 26th with 26.975 points. They were each in the top 20 on the vault, as Goree was 19th with an 8.975 and Fukuda was 20th with an 8.95. Goree also placed 14th on the floor with a 9.35, while Fukuda took 19th in that event with a 9.175 Stephanie Harms had the other top-20 finish for Issaquah, taking 19th on the beam with a score of 8.8. Though the Eagles weren't able to get themselves into the mix for a team title this season, they finished the year as a team to watch for next season. That's because a slew of gymnasts -- including Goree and Fukuda-- are expected to return. "Risa and Olivia will both be back, so we should be pretty good," Fleisher said. "We'll just have to wait and see. You never know who is going to walk through the door at the beginning of the season." At the awards ceremony Feb. 21, it was announced that Liberty's Danielle Kemmerer and Issaquah's Kelly Richards were named to aca- demic all-state teams. "I gave it my all," Palumbo said. "I did well. It was solid for where I am in my (senior sectionals) sea- son." It being his first state meet ex- perience, ealumbo said he had a tough time get'ring the prerace jit- ters out before prelims Feb. 20. "It was intense. I was really, re- ally nervous for prelims," he said. "Then, for finals, I tried to relax "1 did better than I thought. I wasn't running to the warm- up tank, but it was kind of like that - warm-up tank, swim; warm-up tank, swim; warm-up tank, swim. I thought it was pretty fun. It was a challenge, too." - Logan Briggs Liberty High School freshman more and to have a better race." Even though he's content with his 2009 season, ealumbo said he plans to approach state differently next year. His goal is to qualify for more events than just the 500- freestyle, such as the 200-yard freestyle. "I'll probably do the 500-free at the first meet, and my goal is for the rest of the season to get every district time I can," he said. "I want to swim the 200-free, (which is) my goal for a second state cut." Issaquah's Jack Taylor placed 14th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.63 seconds.
