Self-serve gas stations give maintenance responsibility to owner Motorists may crave high ticket cars and more expen- sive options but economy is still a premium point. And because it is, a record three out of four motorists pull up to self-serve gasoline pumps -- all the more rea- son why smart motorists make their own routine in- spections. What gas station atten- dants once performed rou- finely now must be done by the owner. However, car and truck producers have made life simpler by reducing the frequency for such routine maintenance as oil changes and spark plug replacements. The vehicle's owner man- ual may be one of the best circulated and most ignored publications in the nation, or even the world, yet the most important for owners wish- ing to keep their cars in peak condition. The manual tells you that the crankcase oil should be changed on most vehicles every 7,500 miles under normal driving conditions. More frequent oil changes are recommended for engines with turbochargers and cars that tow trailers or often travel dusty, unpaved roads. Since the start of the 80s, vehicle manufacturers have recommended the use of an "SF" classified oil. In addi- tion, motorists should check their owner's manual for the use of a higher viscosity oil in the summer. Spark plugs wear much longer, because there is no Quality Workmanship Expert Knowledge "I guarantee it, because my name is behind it." While the carburetor is becoming a relic, it is vital to keep those fuel injectors clean. Some pumps advertise an injector-cleaning additive contained in the gasoline. CARFACTS • Dealerships and the Public: People who visit several dealerships before buying: I "% ] Buyers who are pleased with dealers: Beware of Bargain Transmission Service Transmission repairs his- torically have been a bone of contention between consumer groups and the auto repair industry. A relatively few dis- reputable repair shops have damaged the reputation of the entire industry. Because a more know- ledgeable vehicle owner is less likely to fall prey to such incompetent or unscrupulous practices, Car Care Council offers advice on dealing with transmission repairs. First, beware of a shop that advertises ridiculously low prices. These repairmen are not in business to lose money and you are justified in being suspicious of an unrealistic charge for their services for $4.95 to $7.95 (plus materials, including fluid, gaskets, filter) when it takes an hour to do the job fight. A more realistic price would be $18 to $30 plus materials. If you are told the transmis- sion needs work beyond rou- tine maintenance, ask the shop to quote maximum price for repairs before you authorize a teardown. In most cases this can be done and if you're told it cannot, seek a second opin- ion. You deserve to know what the maximum price might be. If you use your car in nor- mal driving conditions, if it is shifting properly and if the fluid is red and up to proper level, you are wise to let well enough alone. Check transmission fluid at every third or fourth gas fillup, suggests the Council, and fol- low the maintenance recom- mendations in the owner's manual.
