Vierra is the head of Travel Medicine at the University of Washington Medicine Issaquah Clinic. She said when planning a trip, one of the first things you 'should do is set up an appoint- ment with a health care provider, either your regular doctor or a travel medicine specialist. There are four basic areas of information Vierra shares with her clients, between 50 and 70 people per week: Food and water precautions -- "The standard is boil it, peel it, cook it or forget it," she said. Insect precautions -- On top of which to avoid and what to do if bitten, Vmrra said even what you wear is a factor. "Khaki attracts less than pink or blue, and keep in mind what fragrance you're wearing, such as perfumes or cologne," she said. Rabies -- Few people know that as many as 40,000 people a year die of rabies in India. "We Americans, without a second thought, pet strange dogs, when people in India know you should- n't do that," Vierra said, pointing out that most dogs in developing countries do get shots for rabies. Traffic accidents -- The No. 1 hazard to tourists or anyone new to many developing Countries are traffic accidents. "Places like Brazil consider red lights as merely a suggestion," she said. "They do not stop for pedestrians." The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Washington Chapter, is offering riders and would-be riders a wealth of cy- cling tips and summer training opportunities in advance of its 2009 Bike MS Ride, presented by Point B, Sept. 12 and 13 at the Sk- agit County Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon. Proceeds from.the ride support research and people living with or affected by MS in Western and Central Washington, including King County "Cycling is a great exercise that most everyone can do to improve strength, cardiovasc,ular fitness and balance. Plus, it s cooling in hot weather and relatively easy on the joints,' said Maureen Manley, a former world-class competitive cyclist who now works as an in- spirational speaker and life coach for people with MS. ,Setting a goal like the Bike MS Ride can give you the extra incen- tive you need to get into shape and into cycling for the long haul," she adds. Here are some tips for training and making this a terrific two-' wheeled summer: Assess your fitness level before you start any training program, and consult your doctor if you are older than 65, have been seden- tary or have any health condi- tions, including multiple,sclerosis, that might affect your ability to safely ride. Mksure your bike fits your body, adjusting seat and handle- har heights so that you achieve the proper riding position, sure, take your bike to a bike shop that offers professional fittingS. If you plan on doing long rides or are training for one, consider getting slick or treadless tires. Off-road tires with knobby treads, like those on a mountain bike, are very ,inefficient, requir- ing lots more pedaling energy per mile. To outfit yourself for long rides, you will need a snug, but comfortably fitting helmet; cy- cling shorts (to minimize chafing and other discomforts); a sum- mer cycling jersey with three rear pockets for carrying snacks and other essentials; short-fin- gered cycling gloves to absorb sweat, reduce shock and prevent blisters; and dedicated cycling shoes, either for road riding, or mountain biking. Ideally; you should start riding regularly at least eight weeks be- fore any big ride. While training, your main objective should be to ride your bike five tiules a week, with two well-spaced days off. Hold your week-to-week buildup to 10 percent to 15 percent (whether recording miles or time). Stretch to keep your muscles from getting tight and to prevent overuse injuries.
