Rare crystallized mineral on display in Gilman Village In august, 1979 one of the most important mineral discoveries of the decade was made near North Bend, where extraordinarily large and fine specimens of crystal- lized iron pyrite were mined. The Smithsonian Institute has purchased a major piece; others are being distributed to museums and collectors world-wide. Bob Jackson, one of the discoverers, has used part of the proceeds to open NATURE'S GALLERY, a collector's emporium in Gilman Village. A number of specimens from the North Bend deposit are available at the shop. John S. White, assistant curator of minerals at the Smithsonian, termed the specimens "among the finest North American pyrites." Pyrite, iron disulfide, is a common mineral occurring in metallic ore deposits, but crystals seldom occur over two inches in size. Several crystals from the new find are over five inches, and are beautifully in- tergrown with quarts crystals. The North Bend locality is one of several mining claims owned by Jackson, who each summer produces mineral specimens for sale at U.S. and European collector con- ventions.
